Facilities

The Institute has a laboratory of 600 square meters with cutting edge capabilities to conduct various scientific analyses of artifacts, conservation treatments, and computer simulations of historical technologies. The lab has been equipped with a scanning electron microscope (SEM), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS), Micro-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (Micro-FTIR), laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), 3D laser scanning, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (portable and stationary), a thermomechanical analyzer, 3D microscopy, metallographic microscopy, a field survey drone, and other mobile field investigation equipment.

The library of the Institute contains a collection of more than 36,000 books and many digital resources including Si Ku Quan Shu (the Complete Collection of Four Treasuries), a database of the Late Qing and Republic of China newspapers and journals, a database of ancient Chinese texts, and a database of key academic journals. The Institute has also developed an online database of ancient Chinese metallurgical technologies and an exhibition platform for ancient metallurgy and traditional crafts.
